Making Facebook secure =

It doesn’t take long after you join Facebook for you to begin looking for friends, co-workers or old classmates. The average Facebook user has 130 friends and depending on the activity of your friends this could result in a relatively busy news feed which will undoubtedly contain links to websites, videos and more. As the number of your friends continues to grow the potential for a scam or malicious link to find its way onto your wall or news feed becomes pretty great. This is why you should consider an application or two to help keep you free from threats while using Facebook.

How To Make Facebook secure

One of the security app for your Facebook account is Norton SafeWeb . Unfortunately the application did not provide enough in the way of notifications to really give the end-user an upper hand where Facebook threats are concerned. SafeWeb is created by one of the largest names in desktop security - Symantec - which will hopefully be building upon this app so it can provide real value.

How To Make Facebook secure

The second potion have to be BitDefender Safego app. BitDefender has put together a fine utility that provides the proper notification not only to you but can also notify the friend that may have posted the threat. Safego also provided a way to clean the threat. Finally, you can also use SafeGo to keep an eye on your privacy settings. This app is extremely useful.

Other tools exist to help where Facebook privacy and security are concerned. The folks at ReclaimPrivacy.org are providing an independent tool which scans your privacy setting and alerts you if an area may be unexpectedly public. This is accomplished by placing a bookmark to the tool in your bookmarks toolbar and running the tool while viewing your privacy setting in the browser. Unfortunately the tool does not work 100% with the latest changes to the Facebook privacy settings. It still may prove useful for you and is a service to look in on occasionally.

How To Make Facebook secure

Another tool worth considering is Defensio. Defensio is powered by Websense and includes a focus on Facebook. Defensio appears to work much like BitDefender SafeGo but has the ability to scale to business users. Defensio is able to not only monitor for SPAM and malicious links but can also monitor for profanity. While the Defensio website appears alive and well, it is worth noting the Facebook page is lacking any recent updates and the wall has comments from some pretty unsatisfied users.

How to Select Any Edition or Version (SKU) of Windows 7 to Install From Single Edition DVD Disc Media or ISO

How to Select Any Edition or Version (SKU) of Windows 7 to Install From Single Edition DVD Disc Media or ISOIt is possible the Windows 7 ISO or DVD disc media that end-user possessed may be restricted to install a single edition or version of Windows 7 only. For example, a Windows 7 Professional media may not prompt option to select which edition of Windows 7 to install, and instead will install Windows 7 Professional edition. Likewise for Windows 7 Ultimate DVD ISO image or disc which may not have edition selection screen.

However, all DVD of Windows 7 does contains and able to install all and any version of Windows 7, from Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional to Ultimate edition. Actually, the ability to select the version or edition of Windows 7 during setup installation, or which edition that the setup will automatically install, lies with a small configuration file named ei.cfg on the Windows 7 DVD, disc media or ISO image.

The content of the ei.cfg file, inside the source folder of the DVD looks like below:

[EditionID]
Ultimate
[Channel]
Retail
[VL]
0

When ei.cfg does not exist, Windows 7 setup process will display a screen during Install Windows wizard to ask user to select the operating system (edition) to install. The selection of OS includes Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate. Thus, in order to be able to install any editions or install another different edition of Windows 7 without having to download ISO image or order a new DVD of Windows 7 with all SKUs enabled (all SKU version), use the following hack to delete or modify ei.cfg file.

1.Download and install an disc image utility such as PowerISO or UltraISO to open the ISO image of Windows 7 DVD. If you own a physical DVD disc media, the similar tool allows you to rip the DVD to ISO or other image format too.

Another alternative for user with Windows 7 DVD ISO image downloaded via torrent or from Internet is to extract all contents of the ISO image by using extraction tool such as WinRAR or 7-zip, or mount the ISO and copy contents to a folder.

2.Browse to /sources/ folder.

3.Locate ei.cfg file.

4.Depending on preference, it is possible to modify/edit or simply delete ei.cfg file, as explained below.

Choice 1: Delete ei.cfg

When ei.cfg is deleted, Windows 7 setup wizard will give user an option to select and choose which version (SKU) of operating system user wants to install during installation.

Choice 2: Edit and Modify ei.cfg

By modifying the Edition ID section of ei.cfg by replacing Ultimate (or other edition specified there) with another edition, user can preset another edition SKU of Windows 7 that user want setup to install automatically. The Edition ID available for installation are as follow:

*.Ultimate
*.Professional
*.HomePremium
*.HomeBasic
*.Starter

Save the ei.cfg after editing.

5.For user who wants to in-place upgrade to Windows 7, it is possible to run setup.exe from extracted DVD contents now. The modified ISO can also be burned to a DVD disc or saved to a new ISO image.

How to Backup and Restore Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Activation Status (Activate Offline On Reinstall)==

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, similar to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, requires user to perform activation in order to activate the Windows operating system to be used without interruption. Activation of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, except for users who bought branded OEM computer or activate via KMS host, is normally performed online to validate against Microsoft’s activation server, or via phone activation.

One inconvenience brought by activation is that Microsoft limits and restricts the number of time that online activation can be done. Anything more than that will require user to call Microsoft activation hotline to go through manual hectic process to activate via phone.

How to Backup and Restore Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Activation Status (Activate Offline On Reinstall)

So it would be great if the “activated” activation status of Windows OS can be preserved, or backed up and restored after re-installation so that Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 can be activated offline or without connecting to Microsoft’s activation server.

Try the following trick to backup activation files for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, which has been previously been activated, prior to reinstallation.

1. Copy and save or backup the following activation-related files to external storage medium such as USB flash drive or portable hard disk drive:

%SystemDrive%\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetWorkService\

AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwarePlatform\Tokens.dat

and,

%SystemDrive%\Windows\System32\spp\tokens\pkeyconfig\pkeyconfig.xrm-ms

Note: For 64-bit (x64) OS, %SystemDrive%\Windows\SysWOW64\spp\tokens\pkeyconfig\pkeyconfig.xrm-ms have to be backed up too.

2. Retrieve and record the product key used to install and activate the current Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Tip: If you can’t remember the product key used, there is plenty of product key viewers available to help.

3. Reinstall Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. When installation wizard prompts for a product key for activation, leave it blank (do not enter anything).

4. In the newly installed Windows operating system, stop the Software Protection Service in Services.msc or with the following command (run in elevated command prompt):

net stop sppsvc

5. Navigate to the following folder:

%SystemDrive%\Windows\System32\spp\tokens\pkeyconfig\

Note: In 64-bit (x64) operating system, also perform the action in %SystemDrive%\Windows\SysWOW64\spp\tokens\pkeyconfig\ folder.

6. Take ownership and give user full control permissions (alternatively add grant full control right click menu item) to pkeyconfig.xrm-ms file.

7. Delete the original default pkeyconfig.xrm-ms file, and replace with the backup copy.

8. Navigate to the following folder:

%SystemDrive%\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetWorkService\

AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwarePlatform\

9. Take ownership and give user full control permissions (alternatively add grant full control right click menu item) to tokens.dat file.

10. Delete the original default tokens.dat file, and replace with the backup copy.

11. Restart the Software Protection Service in Services.msc or with the following command (run in elevated command prompt):

net start sppsvc

12. Register the product key for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 with the following command (run in elevated command prompt):

slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

Replace xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx with the actual product key.

13. Windows will activated instantly, off-line. To check activation status, uses of of the following commands:

slmgr.vbs -dlv
slmgr.vbs -dli
slmgr.vbs -ato

Note that the ability to backup and restore old activation status in order to pre-activate or ready-activate a machine after re-installation must be on the same hardware without any hardware change, else user will need to activate online again. Besides, the product key used must be the same serial code too. The hack also does not apply to OEM branded computer which has Windows pre-activated and KMS host activated Windows system.

How To Fix “File Association Error” When Launching Windows Explorer in Windows 7

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."
