Use SkyDrive To Access Files On Your Computer Remotely

In my earlier post, I have informed you about the new SkyDrive Windows application and shown you how you can Upgrade And Get Back SkyDrive’s 25gb Space For Free. But that was not all, The new Improved SkyDrive service is now more then just a cloud storage service. Now you can use SkyDrive To Access all the Files On Your Computer from anywhere using the SkyDrive's web interface.

This feature can be a life saver in certain situations, provided that the feature is already enabled on the computer you are trying to connect, and that the computer is currently connected to the Internet. This feature is specially useful for peoples who don’t want to store their important files on the cloud, but at the same time enjoy the flexibility of having a file anywhere they want. For example, using this service you can access the media collection stored on your home computer from your office.

 

To use this Remote desktop like functionality, first you have to Download and Install SkyDrive Desktop Application on your computer. You can follow my previous article for SkyDrive Windows App Download link and Installation Guide.

After the installation is complete, make sure you have selected the option “Make Files On This PC available to me on my other Devices” on the settings window.

Now go to the SkyDrive website and log into your SkyDrive account with the same Windows Live account that you have used to link the app to the account. On the right sidebar you will see your computers that are online and running the SkyDrive software. Just click on the computer, which files you want to access.On the main interface you will see a security message. To connect to the computer, you have to enter a security code. This extra step only takes a minute and will help protect your computer from unauthorized access. All you have to do is just click on the “Sign in with a security code” link which will basically send a code to the connected mobile device or to the email address connected to that account. This is a one-time process on trusted computers. Now copy the code from your email address and use it to connect to the computer.

After successfully adding your computer, you will be able to the Files and folders of your computer within the SkyDrive’s web interface.

You can browse through your entire hard drive like on a normal file explorer.

If a folder contains Images or Video files then the Thumbnails will also be shown. Even if your video files are in mp4, avi or in any other format, but to stream that video you need to have Silverlight plugin installed for your browser. But the images are displayed just fine. Just click on a image file, and you will be amazed to see your image file in a very beautiful Filmstrip interface. You can also this SkyDrive’s web interface to download a document or spreadsheet, or other files that you need access to right away.

 

Last but not the least, you can also Disconnect your Computer from SkyDrive’s Web interface.  But If you disconnect your computer from SkyDrive, SkyDrive folder on that computer we'll stop updating and accessing that computer remotely from SkyDrive and other Windows Live applications will be prevented. To reconnect the computer, you'll need to sign into SkyDrive on that computer again.
